Current Paint Color Trends

Interior: The most common paint color is white; white is a good choice for many, as it goes well with anybody’s style. It has a tendency to make a room look larger than it is, so white is especially good for smaller rooms. The second most popular color would have to be light brown, like a light latte color. This is best for larger rooms, as it doesn’t make it look bigger like white does; it also brings a nice warm feel to the space. The last color, is one which has become very popular but is normally used as an accent wall, if you haven’t guessed it already, the color is red. You will sometimes find red in kitchens and bathrooms too, only they usually have more of a Cranberry tinge to them.

Exterior: The most popular color when it comes to painting the exterior of your home is white or off-white, often these homes have a dark trim and sometimes shutters. After white it’s really a toss up, it seems that depending on the area you live in the second most popular would either be, browns/tans or blue/grey. Following these colors are yellows and greens, with red and pink falling behind. Mainly due to the fact that people in general like their homes to blend in with the rest of the neighborhood, and the brighter the color, the harder it is to match with the permanent fixtures on your home.

Paint Colors That Are Always Stylish

An easy way to remember the colors that never lose their appeal is to think of nature, nature never goes out of style. That being said colors such as white, beige, brown, tan, and grey used in moderation. Paint with these colors and you can’t go wrong.

Home Styles

Classic Style Description – A classic styled home usually works best in a heritage home only for the reason that to get a true classic look you need rooms rather than open spaces where the rooms flow into one another. Classic looks are composed by much planned out decorating, décor is very symmetrical. The objects you have in a room aren’t nearly as important as the way they’re arranged.

Contemporary Style Description – A contemporary look is one which is very clean, with smooth lines. It’s the most simple of styles, brought together by the use of glass, steel, and stone. Also the colors you use need to be solid, normally in beige, creams, whites, and blacks, homes with a contemporary style have minimal use of detail such as carvings and even the light you use should be lighting that focuses not on the fixture but just of the light it gives out.

Country Style Description – To achieve a country style look in your home, just utilize the use of woods, some furnishings will have the use of chicken wire instead of glass, on cabinet doors. A popular fabric choice is plaid, of all the styles this one would be the most likely to look a little cluttered but if you decorate accordingly you can achieve a beautiful country tone, but with a clean up-to-date appearance.

Eclectic Style Description – Anyone can easily create an eclectic looking home, mostly due to the fact that pretty much anything goes with this style. The purpose is to mix and match different types of furnishings, woods, colors, and textiles. This is a good choice for large families or ones with different ideas of style since you can actually mix earth tones with color and antiques with new pieces.

Modern Style Description – Geometrical shapes and colors such as dark brown, black, and chrome are use to create a modern look, often with hints of deep colors throughout a room. One of the main goals when creating this style is to have the furniture to appear to be floating. For example platform beds, glass bowl sinks, and big wall size windows all help creating a modern style home.

Art Styles

Abstract Art – Abstract art is very colorful and bright, the most distinctive thing about it; however, is the fact that it doesn’t represent any visual object; rather it normally is an expression of emotion or sound.

Classic Art – This type of art is one that has become very famous with artists such as Van Gogh and Edvard Munch, these artists don’t represent classic art just because their work is so old, but also the fact that artists such as these had a way of expressing their thoughts, visions, and dreams in their paintings, this is what makes up classic art.

Naturalistic Art – This would be one of the easiest to describe and to remember, it’s exactly what it says it is, nature. These are the most realistic paintings, sometimes they are so perfectly painted that they almost would appear to be a photo. You could pretty much describe this style as scenery and landscape pictures.

Representational Art – This style is very much as it says it is. When you see representational art it will very much represent something or somewhere, a picture of the statue of liberty for example, most people would instantly know what this is and where to find it, unlike a picture of a house or a mountain, you wouldn’t know exactly which house or mountain it is. So representation art is an exact replica of an object, person, or place.

Neem seed oil is derived from the seeds of an evergreen tree that is native to India. It is a product that has withstood the test of time and been used a medicinal ingredient as well as an organic pesticide for centuries. It has a natural tendency to repel insects that may harm the greenery while allowing other insects that benefit, such as; butterflies, earthworms and bees to maintain their beneficial aspect on the garden.

To use as an insecticide it should be mixed, and diluted with soapy water. It can be sprayed on the garden or greenery every two to four weeks for the best results.

It is created by cold pressing the seeds of the neem tree to release the powerful and pungent oil. It can also be produced by steam or solvent extraction. To use these methods is to decrease the impurities that may be included with other extractions of the neem oil. To retain the most beneficial and concentrated part of the oil is to cold press the oil.

Neem oil is one of the most powerful aspects of any organic pesticide without the harsh chemicals that come in inorganic pesticides.

Neem seed oil is brown in color and has a strong odor that repels insects. It is comprised of large amounts of triterpenoid compounds which are responsible for the bitter taste of the oil. It has been used medicinally for generations to prevent everything from head lice to eczema and is a popular choice as an ingredient in soap.

With Spring right around the corner it is never too early to start planning your garden… For those gardeners looking to be more innovative this year, we recommend using a special theme to help you design your garden.

The Zen Garden

A Zen garden or Japanese rock garden is an enclosed shallow sandpit containing sand, gravel, rocks, and occasionally grass or other natural elements. The main elements of a rock garden are rocks and sand, with the sea symbolized not by water but by sand raked in patterns that suggest rippling water. Plants are much less important (and sometimes non-existent) in many rock gardens. Rock gardens are often, but not always, meant to be viewed from a single, seated perspective, and the rocks are often associated with and named after various Chinese mountains.

We recommend this option if you have an unused shady lot on your property. Instead of trying to fight nature, clean up an area that would normally not support a garden.

Trial Garden

A trial garden is a test garden where gardeners try out new types of plant and/or vegetables. Any gardener might enjoy creating his or her own trial garden to see which plants fare best in a specific garden environment. Gardeners can evaluate their test plants for desirable qualities such as novel flower forms, flower colors, flower show above foliage, fragrance, length of flowering season, and disease or pest tolerances or resistance. Vegetables and fruits should be judged for such traits as speed to harvest, total yield, fruit taste, fruit quality, ease of harvest, plant habit, disease, and pest resistance.

By choosing to make a trial garden for a season, a gardener can improve their garden for years to come. This is a great way to find out how much work certain plants require and if they will flourish in your garden.

Virtual Garden

While researching this garden I found a great tool that lets you plan your garden on your computer. You can become your own landscape architect and easily add or remove plants and items from your virtual garden. The program comes in three versions available from the BBC… an online version and both a PC and Mac version which you can use offline. The program lets you save your gardens so that you can work on it when you have some free time. I love the idea because it allows you save your garden designs and compare them with the final product. Click here for the Virtual Garden.

Hose Reels

Another great idea for designing your garden is to get a hose reel. I recommend a No-Crank hose reel for design and watering purposes. No-Crank hose reels will keep your garden aesthetically pleasing and with the automatic hose reel rewinder you will never have to leave your hose laying in the yard again. No-Crank hose reels come in a wide variety of styles; I like the Country Hose Reel model, a wooden box which blends nicely into most gardens.

What is Lavender

Lavender’s botanical name is Lavendula officinalis / angustifolia. Lavender is a member of the Labiatae Family and is a native of the Mediterranean and Middle East regions, however, lavender plantations are now widely found around the world as species hybridisation has enabled lavender to be grown commercially outside its natural climatic range.

The grey-green foliage and purple-blue flower spike of lavender is easily identified and commonly seen in herb gardens. Its aroma originating from the essential oil contained in lavender is readily recognised, especially when the flowers or leaves are touched.

Where does Lavender come from

The most well known lavender comes from the Mediterranean region of France. The essential oil from the ‘French lavender’, is often preferred by Aromatherapists. However, there are two main species, Lavandula latifolia (spike or sweet lavender) and L. angustifolia (English/French lavender) that are used in commerce.

Today, it flourishes throughout southern Europe, Australia, and the United States.

What are the properties in Lavender

Lavender is used in many forms. Herbalists are most likely to use lavender in the form of tea or as a herbal extract. Aromatherapist however, will use the essential oil extracted by steam distillation from the flowers of lavender in their treatments.

In either case, lavender has many powerful, therapeutic applications, which include:

Depression, insomnia, migraine, hysteria, nervous tension and paralysis.

Although it is not really anti-inflammatory, lavender is often useful where there is inflammation, hence its use in burns, dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis, boils, rheumatism, wounds, ulcers, blepharitis, conjunctivitis, cystitis, diarrhoea, laryngitis, etc.

Lavender is well known for its wound healing, cleansing and toning properties and removes redness and heat from the skin, making Lavender oil a suitable addition to any skin care preparation and for any skin type. Lavender has been shown to be very useful in the relief of burns in which case it can be applied neat to the area. Research has confirmed that lavender produces calming, soothing, and sedative effects.

Using natural ingredients is crucial to making good quality natural skin care products. Not only are using natural ingredients safer to use, but they also have less negative impact on our environment.

Lavender is suitable for use in any skin type. It’s gentle, soothing and calming properties are especially indicated for use on sensitive, dry and/or irritated skin. It is also a popular ingredient in shampoos, soaps, hair conditioners and body lotions.

Lavender’s use in skin care products is far and wide. Because of its soothing, calming properties it is an ideal ingredient in cleansers and moisturisers, but is also of value in toners and masks.

In moisturisers, lavender may be combined with other ingredients such as chamomile, jojoba, calendula, avocado and others, to reinforce the calming and soothing effects of lavender.

Butterflies can be attracted to your garden by a variety of methods including planting brightly coloured flowers and bushes, providing food in the form of rotten fruit or by providing other places where they will congregate.

Flowers and Bushes

To attract butterflies to your garden you need to provide attractive food in the form of brightly coloured flowers and feeders and puddles for drinking water. Leave a part of your garden wild by allowing the grass to grow longer and sprinkling wild flower seeds throughout the area. Choose an area that has sunshine for most of the day but is sheltered from the wind. A few flat stone scattered about will provide resting places. At the edges of the wild area plant flowers and shrubs with brightly coloured blooms.

Butterflies prefer single flowers rather than double blooms as they are easier for gathering nectar. Mix up the colours as butterflies have different preferences. Some will be attracted to flowers in shades of red, orange or yellow, some prefer whites or blues or purples. Also plant in clumps to provide an attractive mass of colour. Annuals and perennials to plant include phlox, lavender, zinnias, asters, candytuft, catnip, daisies, goldenrod, verbena and Marigold. Shrubs and bushes include the butterfly bush (buddleia), honeysuckle, mock orange, potentilla, hawthorn, lilac, and hyacinth.

Make an Artificial Puddle

Shallow puddles will attract butterflies so you can make a permanent artificial puddle. Take a shallow dish and add some sand then moisten with water, stale beer or some fruit juice. Bury the dish up to the rim in a sunny part of the garden.

Food for Butterflies

Butterflies love fermenting fruit and vegetables. A fruit tree in the garden will attract the butterflies if you allow the fallen fruit to stay on the ground. Put out small amounts of over ripe fruit, any type will do, butterflies will love it mushy and fermenting. Uneaten bananas can be stored in the freezer and defrosted when required. The freezing process will turn them black and the fruit inside will be mushy. Just right for attracting butterflies!

Feeders for Butterflies

An easy butterfly feeder can be made by using a shallow saucer or dish with a sloping rim and hanging to a tree branch or pergola with flower pot hangers. Hang it higher than the surrounding flowers. To attract the butterflies plastic or silk flowers can be attached to the hanger. Put some mushy, fermenting fruit sprinkled with water or fruit juice in the dish. Check regularly to make sure it is still damp as butterflies do not like dried food.

Butterfly Nectar

In place of the rotten fruit you could make butterfly nectar by boiling together 1 cup of sugar and 4 cups of water. Do not add any food colouring but, to attract the butterflies, add some brightly coloured objects or plastic flowers to the feeder. You can store the unused nectar in the refrigerator for around a week.

Sponge Butterfly Feeders

Brightly coloured sponges can be soaked in butterfly nectar and hung from pergolas or trees in areas where there are no other flowers.

By providing the ideal conditions for butterflies you will enjoy their visits throughout the summer.

What are the “must-haves” for today’s luxury home owners . . . the most popular design trends and amenities that will provide them with a lifestyle, not just a place to live? What are they seeking which will help them to create beautiful, livable spaces that meet their aesthetic, functional and economic goals . . .

As an interior designer in Orlando, Florida I work with clients to design, or redesign their luxury homes. I initially meet with these homeowners to discuss ways on how to best blend their lifestyle with their design style to meet the multiple needs of those who will be living in the home.

The overall theme I am hearing from this clientele puts great emphasis on convenience and simple sophistication. They want their home to be transformed, with an atmosphere only found in 5 star grande retreats. Function and comfort have quickly become a top priority for this upscale homeowner. They also want a home where they can close the door on the hustle and bustle of the outside world to entertain both family and friends. In a word, they are looking for an oasis.

The following are some of these most requested design trends and amenities:

Interior and Exterior Space The luxury homeowner is looking for 3500 to 4000 square feet under roof – minimum, with 4 to 5 bedrooms, 3 to 4 baths. They also are requiring larger, optional outdoor living areas for cabanas, bars, pools, spas, recreational courts, fire pit seating areas etc.

Entertainment Areas The kitchen has always been considered to be the “heart” of the home. Luxury homeowners want this area to be designed to accommodate their desire to entertain on a grand scale, both formally and informally. Gourmet kitchens for the interior and exterior are considered “must-haves”, complete with high end energy efficient and sustainable appliance packages. Wine cellars, butler’s pantry, walk-in kitchen pantry and central serving islands have become expected amenities.

Oversized Master Bedroom/Bath Suites This area will often include a library, sitting room and dramatic master bath where luxury homeowners can go to “retreat, refresh, and become rejuvenated” both physically and mentally! From the finest Egyptian bed linens to a master bath area complete with doorless multihead showers, whirlpool baths and towel-warming drawers/racks . . . attention to individual customized design detailing is essential to create the spa experience at home.

Home Office Suites Technology, the internet and wireless communication have transformed our daily activities. Luxury homeowners view in-home office suites as their personal headquarters to manage their busy lives.

High Home Technology Technological advancements have made it possible to assemble a superior surround sound theatre experience for in-home entertaining. People are now watching more movies than ever . . . but, they no longer have to leave the home to do it! The high performance of technology stretches beyond entertainment to bathrooms and kitchens where sensored faucets that shut on and off automatically are becoming a popular request. Also the opening and closing of room darkening window coverings at the touch of a button has become an extremely popular feature as well.

All of the above trends and amenities have been designed to delight, meet the changing needs, improve the quality of life . . . and lifestyle, of the most discriminating homeowners.

J. Brian Keith asked:

The more you understand about any subject, the more interesting it becomes. As you read this article you’ll find that the subject of organic gardening is certainly no exception.

Most of this information comes straight from the organic gardening pros. Careful reading to the end virtually guarantees that you’ll know what they know.

Organic gardening is steadily gaining popularity, and the good news is that virtually every kind of plant and flower can be grown organically. It is important, however, to choose the plants and flowers that are best suited to your own environment. Choosing plants that are suited to the environment in which they grow is one of the best ways to reduce the use of fungicides, pesticides and other chemicals in the garden.

For example, it may be difficult to use organic gardening methods to grow tropical variety of plants and flowers in a cold climate, just as it would be difficult to grow cold climate plants in the tropics. That is why it is best to use the flowers and plants that are best suited for your own environment.

One great way to choose the right plants for an organic garden is to choose native varieties of plants. Choosing native species is a great way to know that the plants you choose will do best where you plant them, without the need to use chemicals.

Using native species of plants does not mean a dull or boring garden. Native species of flowers and plants are available in just about every color of the rainbow, and in a variety of sizes, shapes and textures as well. A beautiful mixture of native plants can produce an organic garden you will be proud to show the world.

After you have chosen the perfect varieties of flowers and plants for your garden, it is important to choose only the healthiest specimens for your garden. That is because choosing unhealthy plants, or those that are infected with disease or infested by insects, could unwittingly introduce these problems into your garden, and make gardening organically that much more difficult.

Choosing the healthiest plants and flowers, on the other hand, will get your organic garden off to the best start, since healthy plants are better able to fight off pests, and to resist bacterial, viral and fungal infections. The healthy plants in your garden will be able to fight off these common ailments without the need for chemicals.

After the plants have been chosen and brought home, they should be transplanted as quickly as possible. It is a good idea to have a good supply of finished compost available when starting an organic garden. Starting a compost bin is a great idea for any organic gardener, since high quality compost often contains nutrients that even the best commercial fertilizers do not. In addition, creating your own compost means less waste going to landfills, and this can produce a healthier environment as well as a healthy garden.

When working a compost mixture in the soil, it is not necessary to go deep. Most plants root only to a depth of about six inches, so working the compost mixture into the first six to eight inches of the soil in the organic flower bed should be sufficient.

When transplanting seedlings from plastic nursery containers, it is important to carefully remove the plant from the container. You should carefully tear away those roots that have grown past the container. Before planting the transplants, be sure that the soil has been adequately prepared with good organic material. Having organic material in the soil not only will provide a great source of nutrition for the young plants, but it will so encourage the growth of beneficial organisms like earthworms. Earthworms can work the soil better than any garden instrument, and they are an integral part of a successful organic garden.

Is there really any information about organic gardening that is nonessential? We all see things from different angles, so something relatively insignificant to one may be crucial to another.
